Sixteen years de-risking subsurface energy — from oil & gas exploration to geothermal reserves assessment, natural hydrogen, and carbon storage. My work brings reserves-grade rigor and physics-based risk modelling to the geothermal sector.
Alongside my research, I mentor students and early-career geoscientists navigating similar paths — international PhDs, industry-to-academia moves, and the shift from oil & gas into the energy transition.
I grew up in Shillong, a small hilly town in Northeast India. In 2005, when I first started studying geology, one lecture on plate tectonics sparked a lifelong fascination. I had no idea where it would lead, but it felt like the right path.
I topped my university and chose to pursue Geophysics, combining my two favorite subjects: geology and physics. After clearing one of the toughest entrance exams in the country, I made my way to IIT Bombay for a postgraduate degree in Applied Geophysics, as the only woman in my class. My career took shape when I joined the subsurface exploration team at SLB in Mumbai, India, working on oil and gas projects across India, the Middle East, and Australia.
The next leap took more courage: leaving a secure job and a comfortable life in Mumbai to join an oil and gas operator in Germany. Everything was new and challenging: the language, the food, and the culture, but I've always been drawn to a challenge, and I found my footing the way I usually do — by learning the language first. It turned out to be the shortcut to people's hearts.
From there, I pivoted into geothermal energy research, leading international projects across Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Italy, and Switzerland. During this time, I also decided to fulfill my long-held wish of obtaining a Doctoral degree - a big decision past 30, in addition to a full-time job. It was an intense journey, and I am proud to say I graduated with Summa Cum Laude, the highest distinction in late 2021.
Today, at Ad Terra in Geneva, I am back in industry, leading the company's R&D portfolio and innovation strategy – all with the aim of making low-carbon energy sources like geothermal and natural hydrogen more commercially viable. Alongside this, I collaborate internationally with universities and research institutions, and mentor and supervise students, supporting them in reaching their research goals.

My work focuses on quantifying subsurface potential, performance, and uncertainty by integrating geophysics, reservoir physics, numerical modelling, experimental data and field observations. Developed across oil & gas and geothermal systems, these capabilities now extend to natural hydrogen, helium, geological CO2 storage and emerging subsurface technologies.
Leadership of multi-million CHF/EUR international R&D programmes involving academia, industry, technology providers and public-sector stakeholders. Led multidisciplinary teams of 20+ researchers across multiple institutions and countries through major international programmes, while defining technical direction, critically reviewing project outputs and translating complex subsurface results into clear project and investment decisions.
Resource and reserve evaluation across the full assessment chain — from estimating recoverable geothermal potential and modelling well and reservoir performance to development scenarios and techno-economics. Experience in conducting screening and technical due-diligence studies assessing subsurface assumptions, key uncertainties, development assumptions and associated technical risks.
Integrated characterisation of rocks and fracture systems using well logs, geophysical interpretation, laboratory measurements and geomechanical analysis. Numerical and analytical modelling of heat transfer, fluid flow and reservoir behaviour across geothermal and other subsurface systems, combining deterministic, stochastic and process-based forward modelling to quantify uncertainty and improve predictive capability.
Integration of geological, geophysical, geochemical and reservoir data to identify and de-risk emerging energy systems — superhot/supercritical and Enhanced Geothermal Systems, Carbon Plume Geothermal, natural hydrogen and helium. I currently lead Switzerland’s first natural hydrogen and helium exploration project, applying integrated subsurface screening to define and evaluate exploration targets.
Paromita was a Postdoctoral Researcher and later Oberassistantin (Senior Researcher) in my Geothermal Energy and Geofluids group at ETH Zurich, where she served as scientific lead of DEPLOI the HEAT-CH and Project Manager of the EU-funded EASYGO consortium — a €3M project recognized as one of the best-executed ITN projects in 2023 by the European Commission. She is an excellent, creative, and rigorously working scientist: highly reliable, self-sufficient, and equally effective working independently or leading a team. Her industry background enables her to operate in a highly professional manner and to present her results in a highly effective and succinct form, always tailored to the target audience and on time. I give her my highest recommendation.
Dr. Deb has been an extraordinarily valuable part of my research team. She has always been very motivated and painstaking, quickly adapted to new challenges, and consistently obtained excellent results. She has always been a very conscientious and reliable person — open towards innovation and characterized by a distinct intellectual grasp and great flexibility.

Looking back, I made several decisions whose outcomes were far from certain — moving to Germany with a one-year contract and no knowledge of the language or culture, starting a PhD after the age of 30, moving between institutions in multiple countries, and switching between industry and academia more than once.
What I now know is that the path doesn't have to be linear to be right. What makes the difference is having someone who has walked similar ground and can offer an honest perspective on what challenges to expect, and how best to prepare for them.
Over the years, that's meant showing up in a few different ways:
If my experience can help make someone else's journey a little clearer, then sharing it is worthwhile.
